Dental Tooth Implant

A dental implant is a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth.

Our team here at Appledore recognise that having missing teeth can really knock your confidence, as well as affect the way you eat and speak. Dental implants offer a long-lasting and discreet choice of treatment for replacing teeth.

Our experienced dental implant dentists here in Milton Keynes will place an implant directly into your jawbone, where they provide an artificial replacement for the root of your missing tooth or teeth. This then supports crowns or dentures, in a similar way that roots support natural teeth.

What is a Dental Tooth Implant?

A dental implant itself is a titanium screw, which is placed directly into your jawbone, replacing your missing tooth root. After it’s fitted, the bone surrounding your implant will gradually fuse to it, holding the implant firmly in place. A false tooth (a crown or denture) is then fitted to the top of the implant (the abutment), giving a natural look to your smile.

Implant Assessment

Dr Whelan, our dental implants dentist in Milton Keynes will assess the state of your gum where the tooth was lost. If you lost the tooth very recently in a traumatic event and you still have it, it’s possible he could put it back in for you.

If the gap is older or if you’ve previously had dentures, he sometimes need to prepare the site by doing a bone graft or sinus lift, which will build up the jawbone where the implant will go. The placement of implants helps to prevent the loss of your jawbone which naturally occurs with loss of teeth. As such it helps maintain the strength and shape of your jaws, and contributes to maintaining a youthful appearance.

You can have a single implant, or you can have multiple ones if you need more than one tooth replaced. It is possible to have several implants fitted in the same procedure. If you have few or no teeth, the smile in a day technique might work for you. This uses four to six implants supported by a bridge.

Implants can be placed in almost anyone over 16.  They are not normally used in children, as their bones are not fully grown.

As soon as you are ready, we make an appointment to place the implant.

The Implant Procedure

The dental implant is placed in your mouth and left for about three to six months. During this time new bone grows around the implant, securing it in a process called osseointegration.

A connecting piece called an abutment is added to the implant and a false tooth made to exactly fit and match your other teeth is placed on top. The quality of these restorations is such that you can easily forget which tooth is the false one!

Appledore can then subsequently place single crowns, bridgework, or attachments to retain dentures on top of your implants.

“I will definitely recommend you to friends and family. It’s not always easy to find a dentist you can totally trust. But I have and so I want to tell everyone about you!”

Dr Teresa Day gave me front teeth implants about 20 years ago after an accident. Still perfect after all these years!

Finding a good dentist is not easy, but I was fortunate enough to have Appledore Dental Clinic recommended by a few friends and they did not disappoint. A very professional clinic with a super friendly team who couldn’t make my appointments any easier, especially for someone who previously had a bit of a phobia of dentists! I would personally recommend them to anyone and if you too are looking for a dentist, then do not hesitate to give them a call.

How to care for your dental implant

Dental implants are a long-term, durable solution for missing teeth. If cared for properly, dental implants can last just as long as normal healthy teeth. To make sure you get the most out of your implant and that it heals successfully, we’ve put together the following advice.

Cleaning your implant

For two weeks after having your implant fitted, you must rinse the area with antiseptic mouthwash (which we can recommend to you) morning and night for one minute. You’ll also need to rinse your mouth with warm salt water after every meal.

It’s important that you don’t brush your implant until you’ve had your stitches removed. After a few days, you can brush your teeth again gently, avoiding the implant site as best you can. After two weeks, and the removal of the stitches, you can brush the implant with antiseptic gel and a soft brush.

Eating with an implant

For the first week after having your implant fitted, you should only eat soft foods such as mashed potato or soup. You should also avoid anything that might get stuck in your teeth like seeds or popcorn. If these get into the implant site, it could cause an infection.

Once your implant has been fitted and has fully healed, your implants and replacement teeth should work the same as natural teeth. You’ll be able to eat all your favourite foods, just as you would with normal healthy teeth.

Longer term oral health

Once your mouth has fully healed, it’s important to keep up good oral health to make sure you get the maximum lifespan out of your implant. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly.

You should also visit your hygienist frequently for scale and polish treatments. Your hygienist will also be able to see if any areas need more attention when brushing.

Follow-up appointments

After you’ve had your implant fitted, your dentist will arrange review appointments to make sure that the bone and gum around the implant has healed correctly and that everything is comfortable for you. They will also check that you haven’t developed an infection.

If you have any concerns or if you think you might have an infection in the implant site, you should always contact your implant dentist as soon as you can.

Appledore offers high quality and affordable Dental Implant Treatments in Milton Keynes, with very experienced clinicians.

Appledore recommend Straumann implants as they are top quality.

Dr Teresa has been to the manufacturing facilities of a number of implant companies, they are all quite high tech, but the Straumann facility is decidedly ‘space age’.  All the implants are checked under the microscope and then go through an amazing finishing process that you can watch here
