There are three key types of orthodontic braces and the modern Invisalign method which uses clear aligners.
1. Invisalign

At Appledore we are able straighten your teeth with a series of invisible aligners. This is a popular option used by celebrities and is suitable for both adults and teenagers.

► Because you can use whitening gel and have an incredible white smile whilst your teeth are being straightened
The Invisalign system is a series of clear aligners which are worn to lightly move your teeth into their new position. You will need to wear them all the time, apart from when you eat and when you clean your teeth.

What is the process if I choose to have my
teeth straightened using Invisalign?
We begin by taking a series of photographs and x-rays along with a set of very accurate impressions (these are your Invisalign records).
These are then sent to the Invisalign facility in California where the impressions are scanned with lasers to make 3D images of your teeth. These are then ‘straightened’ virtually on the computer, step by step.
It is important to note that if your teeth need to have fillings they have to be completed before Appledore can begin taking your records for the Invisalign orthodontic treatment - or else the aligners will not fit. Your Appledore dentist will give advice if any fillings are required.
Treatment times are similar to those of regular braces.
The estimated cost of your Invisalign at Appledore treatment will be given to you at this stage and we ask you to pay a non-refundable deposit. Once your treatment plan has been returned from California, you will be advised of the total cost for your Invisalign at Appledore treatment.

Once your Appledore dentist has established your treatment plan and discussed this with you, the computer images will be sent to the manufacturing point to make your series of custom aligners. This can take 8-10 weeks before we get everything back from the USA in order to fit your first aligners. Every aligner is worn for approximately 2 weeks, and you will see your teeth begin to come into line.
It is possible that you might need some small tooth coloured attachments on your teeth to help your aligner to stay in position. These will be matched to your tooth colour so they will not be noticeable. We will arrange for you to see your Appledore dentist every 6 weeks to check your progress.
After the treatment has been completed you will wear the last set of aligners as retainers at night for approximately one year. You may want to have a new set of retainers made annually to wear at night over the long term. You can then be certain that the teeth will remain in their new positions.

2. Removable Braces
Although these braces can be removed, but they must be worn full-time - apart from when they have to be cleaned.
► Simple removable braces are perfect for correcting minor problems, such as moving a single tooth.
► A removable brace is just clipped onto several teeth. There is no discomfort involved. Removable braces are adjusted every 4-8 weeks.
3. Functional Braces
These are also removable and must be worn full-time, except for cleaning. This type of brace is used to correct the growth pattern of the jaws.
Functional Braces can be used when one jaw is bigger than the other, to correct asymmetry. They can be used in combination with headgear to help jaws to grow correctly.

4. Fixed Braces
Your teeth will have tiny attachments glued to them. Fixed braces fixed to upper and lower teeth can look a bit like railway lines, and are often referred to as "train-track braces".
► These are ideal for correcting complex problems.
► When used for children they are usually made of stainless steel because they are easier to keep clean.
