What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a metal blade or post which is surgically placed into your jawbone. Older implants were often made of steel however more modern implants are made of titanium with various surface coatings for different applications. At the moment, researchers are also looking at ceramics as an alternative.
The titanium insert is biological sure, and is regarded as osteogenic, in that it encourages new bone formation. Your bone grows onto your implant, creating a solid structure.
At Appledore we are then able to place single crowns, bridgework, or attachments to retain dentures on top of your implants.

Placement of implants
As a rule Dental Implants can be placed in most people over the age of 16. They are not however normally used in children, due to the fact that their bones are not fully grown.
The use of dental implants can help to prevent the loss of your jawbone which naturally occurs with teeth loss. As such it helps to preserve the strength and shape of your jaws, and contributes to maintaining a youthful appearance. It is not required to have an implant for each tooth that is missing as gaps can be bridged in the normal way.
Scientific evidence has shown a success rate of more than 95% over a 15 year period for modern Dental Implants.

Contra-indications
The biggest contra-indication for your implant is smoking, as smoking badly affects your bone chemistry, preventing the normal uptake of calcium. Not only this but it also affects wound healing and depletes Vitamin C levels which is also necessary for healing.
Smoking therefore reduces the success rate to less than 60%. As a rule, Appledore will not normally place implants in smokers.
Its not just smoking that can cause problems. Alcoholism also affects bone health. Alcoholics are can sometimes be a little less than fastidious about their general health and hygiene, and are therefore not likely to be good candidates for implant treatment.
Diabetics can be considered for treatment if their diabetes is controlled.
Other medical conditions will be considered on a one-to-one basis.
