“Restylane” is the trade name of a product containing hyaluronic acid which is used in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles we use this product alongside similar ones.
We’d like to thank Restylane for the use of this information from their website Q-Med.
What is happening as we age?
Young people have skin that is smooth and elastic which contains a hefty amount of hyaluronic acid that helps the skin look healthy. When we grow older, the capacity of the skin to create hyaluronic acid decreases and the quantity of hyaluronic acid begins to drop. As hyaluronic acid helps to bind water, the ability of the skin to hold water also declines with age. Consequently skin becomes drier, thinner and unable to restore itself. The loss of skin fullness also means that the skin becomes looser. This is what leads to wrinkles and the appearance of older skin.
Why do you get lines and wrinkles?
The dermis is the skin layer accountable for the skin's resilience and flexibility. The dermis functions as the skin's support structure. It contains collagen, elastin and other biological substances who’s key function is to embrace moisture in the skin. One of these substances is hyaluronic acid. As we age, the amount of collagen and hyaluronic acid falls and the elasticelastin fibres grow to be looser and tend to collect in formations which creates wrinkles and folds. Yet, age is not the only reason for wrinkles. Other factors such as smoking, sun bathing and pollution harm the formation of your skin, regardless of age.
The skin’s layers
Skin is made up of three major layers: the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the external layer that protects you from heat and cold. The state of the epidermis results in how your skin appears as well how well your skin absorbs and retains moisture. Wrinkles, though, are created in lower layers. The dermis is the middle layer of the skin and the skin's support structure. It is the thickest layer and consists of an arrangement of collagen and elastin fibres. The subcutaneous tissue consists largely of fat that keeps us warm, stores energy and protects internal organs.
Exercise to battle wrinkles
Most people don’t realise that exercise does not just strengthen your body, it also reinforces your skin. When your body is subjected to pressure during a work-out, you also exercise your skin. The increase in blood circulation increases the renewal of cells and makes the capillaries stronger.
Botox and Muscle Relaxants
When using your facial muscles continually throughout your lifetime, your skin is lined in areas of most use. The ageing process will cause the slowdown of collagen and elastin production in your skin. As a result as you get older the overused areas become damaged and your lines become permanent.
Reducing the movement of your muscles in these areas will stop your skin being creased and allows it to recuperate, which in turn causes your lines to soften or even fade away. In the treated areas, your muscles are temporarily inactivated, for the period of which you can break the subconscious habit of overusing these muscles.
The response to treatment can vary depending on the product used and your individuality, from a relaxation of your muscles to an inability to move your muscles.
During the first few years, regular treatments are necessary to “re-educate” the muscles in your face. Subsequently, treatments would be less frequent until a yearly maintenance treatment is all that is needed. As the medication is injected into your muscle it causes it to become weakened or inactivated. It stops your muscle from working by jamming your neuromuscular transmission – it prevents chemical messages going from your nerves to your muscles.
At Appledore our clinicians always use prescription medication with more than 40 years of research and development. Widely used around the globe for the softening and removal of wrinkles.

Heart Lips™
This fantastic enhancing treatment that all the celebrities are raving about, is available NOW with Dr Teresa at Appledore Dental Clinic.

Lips have a very strong influence on the aesthetic quality of the face. Along with large eyes, a small nose and delicate features, full lips are traditionally regarded as typically female facial traits. Lips are not immune to the effect of ageing, however, dissatisfaction with lip shape or size is not necessarily associated purely with ageing – increasingly Dr Teresa is seeing younger women who are looking to enhance their appearance with lip augmentation.
A good treatment should always ensure that your lips are in harmony, balance and proportion with the overall size and shape of your face.
This new technique was devised by Dr Bob Khanna and came from looking at women who were naturally very beautiful - many of these women had a particular facial feature in common – a discernible cleft in the mid-line of the lower and sometimes even upper lip that results in a twin lobe shape. This means that their lips are naturally heart-shaped.
Dr Teresa @ Appledore is fully licensed by Dr Bob Khanna to provide Heart Lips™

Heart Lips™is a technique that recreates that natural, heart shaped appearance
